New York Times: “What Guilt Does the U.S. Bear in Guatemala?”

Interesting piece in NYT’s “Room for Debate” section, featuring different viewpoints re: U.S. culpability in the Guatemalan genocide of Mayans and the 36-year civil war.  This piece was published shortly after the trial of General  Rios Montt on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.

Ronald Reagan, who provided  political support and military aid to dictator Rios Montt, famously declared that Rios Montt was  “a man of great personal integrity” . Amid criticisms of Rios Montt’s horrific human rights record, Reagan also stated that the general was getting a “bum rap” .
